Overview

Minocycline + bismuth is a combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients used primarily as part of quadruple therapy regimens for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, especially in patients with penicillin allergy or after failure of standard therapies. Minocycline is a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, while bismuth compounds (such as bismuth potassium citrate or colloidal bismuth pectin) exert antimicrobial effects against H. pylori and protect gastric mucosa. This combination is often administered alongside other agents such as metronidazole and a proton pump inhibitor or potassium-competitive acid blocker to enhance efficacy. Clinical studies have shown that minocycline-containing bismuth quadruple regimens achieve high eradication rates with good safety and compliance profiles, making them suitable alternatives when classical tetracycline-based therapies are not feasible[1][3][5][6][8].
