Overview

Minocycline + omega-3 fatty acids is an investigational combination therapy evaluated for the prevention of psychosis in individuals with at-risk mental states (ARMS). The combination pairs minocycline, a tetracycline antibiotic with neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (specifically eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), which are essential for brain structure and function. The rationale for the combination is based on the hypothesis that neuroinflammation and oxidative stress contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and the transition from prodromal states to full-blown psychosis. In the NAYAB clinical trial, the combination was tested to determine if its synergistic anti-inflammatory effects could reduce the rate of transition to psychosis, though results indicated that the combination did not significantly prevent transition compared to placebo.
