Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Minocycline + rifampin is a synergistic combination of two broad-spectrum antibiotics: minocycline (a tetracycline antibiotic) and rifampin (a rifamycin antibiotic). This combination is widely utilized for its potent antimicrobial and anti-biofilm properties, particularly in preventing catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) and surgical site infections. It is commercially available as an impregnation in medical devices, such as the Cook Spectrum central venous catheters and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), and the TYRX absorbable antibacterial envelope (developed by Medtronic) used to stabilize cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) and neurostimulators. Additionally, Citius Pharmaceuticals is developing Mino-Wrap (CITI-101), a bioabsorbable gelatin film containing minocycline and rifampin, to prevent infections associated with post-mastectomy breast tissue expanders. The combination is also used off-label as an oral regimen for the eradication of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization and as a second-line treatment for brucellosis and leprosy.
