Overview

Profounda's minocycline hydrochloride microspheres is a generic version of Arestin, developed for the treatment of periodontal disease. The product consists of 1 mg of minocycline hydrochloride, a tetracycline-class antibiotic, encapsulated in bioresorbable poly(glycolide-co-lactide) (PGLA) microspheres. It is designed for subgingival administration into periodontal pockets by dental professionals as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) procedures. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible pathogens. This sustained-release formulation allows for localized delivery of the antibiotic, maintaining therapeutic concentrations at the site of infection to reduce pocket depth in adult patients with periodontitis. Profounda received FDA Competitive Generic Therapy (CGT) designation for this product in 2018.
