Overview
Minuet is a combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) containing the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol (30 mcg) and the third-generation progestogen gestodene (75 mcg). It is primarily indicated for the prevention of pregnancy. The drug's mechanism of action involves the suppression of gonadotropins, specifically follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which effectively inhibits ovulation. Additionally, the progestogen component increases the viscosity of cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and induces endometrial changes that reduce the likelihood of successful implantation. As a third-generation contraceptive, it was developed to provide effective pregnancy prevention with lower androgenic activity compared to earlier formulations, although it has been associated with a slightly higher risk of venous thromboembolism.
