miR-103 is a microRNA that serves as a key epigenetic regulator of triglyceride metabolism and lipid homeostasis. It exerts its therapeutic potential by suppressing de novo lipogenesis through the direct targeting of Fatty Acid Synthase (FASN) and Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase 1 (SCD1). Furthermore, miR-103 modulates the ANGPTL8/ANGPTL3 axis by repressing Angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL8) expression, which subsequently increases Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL) activity and reduces plasma triglyceride levels. Research indicates that miR-103 is significantly downregulated in obese individuals, and its restoration via overexpression or mimicry is being investigated as a treatment for dyslipidemia and obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction.
