miR-148a-3p mimics are synthetic RNA molecules designed to replicate the activity of the endogenous microRNA miR-148a-3p. In oncology research, specifically for head and neck cancer, these mimics function as radiosensitizers by directly targeting and suppressing the expression of Integrin alpha-5 (ITGA5). By inhibiting the ITGA5 signaling pathway, miR-148a-3p mimics reduce cancer cell proliferation and migration, promote DNA damage and genomic instability, and induce G2/M phase arrest following radiation exposure. Additionally, they have been shown to mitigate radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBEs), which are responsible for secondary tumorigenesis and metastasis. Recent developments involve the use of Wharton's Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cell (WJMSC)-derived exosomes as a delivery vehicle to transport these mimics into target cancer cells, enhancing their therapeutic potential during radiotherapy.
