miR-148a-5p mimic is a synthetic, double-stranded RNA oligonucleotide designed to simulate the functional activity of the endogenous microRNA miR-148a-5p. In the context of multiple myeloma (MM) research, miR-148a-5p has been identified as significantly overexpressed in patients compared to healthy controls. While its sister strand, miR-148a-3p, has been shown to promote cell proliferation and target tumor suppressor genes like CCDC6, experimental transfection of miR-148a-5p mimics in MM cell lines (such as KMS28BM and KMS27) has not demonstrated significant alterations in cell proliferation. The mimic functions by incorporating into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to mediate post-transcriptional gene silencing of target mRNAs, serving as a critical tool for investigating the differential roles of miRNA arms in plasma cell dyscrasias.
