Overview

miR-153 mimic is a synthetic microRNA designed to restore or augment the activity of endogenous miR-153. It functions by binding to the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of specific target mRNAs, notably the transcription factors SNAI1 and SNAI2, which are key drivers of the endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT). In conditions like pulmonary hypertension (PH), miR-153 is often downregulated, leading to increased EndMT, vascular remodeling, and endothelial cell proliferation. By mimicking the natural inhibitory effects of miR-153 on these mesenchymal genes, the mimic prevents the phenotypic transition of lung vascular endothelial cells and attenuates pulmonary vascular remodeling. Research into this therapeutic approach is being conducted by academic institutions including the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic.
