Overview

A miR-181a inhibitor is a synthetic oligonucleotide designed to complementarily bind and neutralize microRNA-181a (miR-181a). miR-181a is a member of the miR-181 family and plays a significant role in regulating cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and hematopoietic differentiation. In several malignancies, including multiple myeloma and certain leukemias, miR-181a is frequently overexpressed, acting as an oncomir that promotes cell proliferation and confers resistance to chemotherapy agents like bortezomib. By sequestering miR-181a, these inhibitors aim to restore the expression of tumor suppressor genes, inhibit tumor cell growth, and enhance sensitivity to treatment. While primarily used as research tools, they represent a potential therapeutic strategy for cancers characterized by miR-181a dysregulation.
