Overview

miR-181a1 mimic is a synthetic RNA oligonucleotide designed to emulate the activity of the endogenous microRNA miR-181a1. It functions by binding to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target messenger RNAs, specifically intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and endothelial cell-specific molecule 1 (ESM1), thereby promoting their degradation and reducing their protein expression. In the context of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), intermittent hypoxia leads to the downregulation of miR-181a1, which in turn causes an increase in these inflammatory markers, contributing to vascular dysfunction and atherosclerosis. The miR-181a1 mimic is used in research to counteract these effects, suggesting a potential therapeutic pathway for mitigating hypoxia-induced vascular damage.
