miR-184 mimic is an RNA therapy being investigated for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It functions by upregulating the microRNA-184 level, which in turn attenuates retinal cell damage by suppressing hypoxia, angiogenesis, and apoptosis. Specifically, it suppresses hypoxia-related angiogenic signals via the HIF-1α/VEGF/MMPs axis, inhibits the hypoxia sensor miR-155, and downregulates genes in the EGFR/PI3K/AKT pathway. Additionally, miR-184 mimic inhibits retinal apoptosis by upregulating BCL-2 and downregulating pro-apoptotic factors such as BAX, TRAIL, Caspase 3, Caspase 8, and p53. Its safety profile has been observed to be similar to Bevacizumab, with potentially more effective therapeutic potential due to its multi-pathology regulation.
