Mir-19 is an inhaled antiviral siRNA-based therapy developed by the Institute of Immunology of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia for the treatment of COVID-19. The drug consists of a specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) complexed with a peptide dendrimer (KK-46) that facilitates delivery into the lungs via a nebulizer. Mir-19 works by targeting a highly conserved sequence within the SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene, triggering the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway to degrade the viral genome and inhibit replication. It was granted emergency use authorization in Russia in December 2021 and has been studied in clinical trials for both hospitalized patients with moderate disease and outpatients with mild COVID-19.
