miR-21 mimic is a research-stage synthetic, double-stranded RNA oligonucleotide designed to replicate the biological activity of endogenous microRNA-21 (miR-21). As a microRNA replacement therapy, it functions by binding to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs, leading to translational repression or mRNA degradation. In preclinical metabolic research, miR-21 mimics have demonstrated the ability to prevent high-fat diet-induced weight gain by promoting white adipose tissue browning and thermogenesis. Additionally, it has been explored for cutaneous wound healing by regulating PDCD4 and matrix metalloproteinases. While miR-21 is often overexpressed in cancers (acting as an oncomiR), its therapeutic mimicry is primarily investigated in regenerative medicine and metabolic health across various academic institutions.
