miR-214 inhibitors are a class of therapeutic agents, typically antisense oligonucleotides or antagomirs, designed to bind and neutralize microRNA-214 (miR-214). miR-214 is a microRNA that is frequently overexpressed in various cancers, including melanoma, where it acts as an oncomiR by promoting cell invasion, migration, and metastasis. It achieves this by downregulating tumor-suppressive transcription factors such as TFAP2 and increasing the expression of adhesion molecules like ALCAM. By inhibiting miR-214, these agents aim to restore normal gene expression patterns and suppress the aggressive phenotype of tumor cells. Beyond oncology, miR-214 inhibition is also being explored for potential applications in treating fibrotic and cardiovascular diseases.
