Overview
miR-218 is a tumor-suppressive microRNA that is frequently downregulated in various cancers, including renal cell carcinoma (RCC), gastric cancer, and cervical cancer. It functions by post-transcriptionally regulating multiple oncogenic targets involved in cell migration, invasion, and focal adhesion pathways. A key validated target in RCC is caveolin-2 (CAV2). miR-218 also influences signaling through the focal adhesion and tight junction pathways, impacting genes such as claudin-1, AKT3, and R-Ras2. Therapeutic strategies involving miR-218 typically focus on restoring its expression to inhibit tumor progression and metastasis.
