Overview

miR-26a is a microRNA molecule being investigated as a therapeutic agent for multiple myeloma and other cancers. It acts as a tumor suppressor by post-transcriptionally regulating gene expression. Specifically, miR-26a binds to the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of the CD38 mRNA, inhibiting its translation into protein. In multiple myeloma, downregulation of CD38 by miR-26a leads to reduced cell proliferation, increased apoptosis, and may sensitize cells to treatments such as daratumumab, bortezomib, and melphalan. Preclinical research has explored various delivery systems, including single-wall carbon nanotubes, to transport miR-26a mimics to tumor sites in vivo.
