Drug intelligence / Profile preview
miR-299a-5p inhibitor is a research-stage locked nucleic acid (LNA) anti-miR oligonucleotide that competitively inhibits the microRNA miR-299a-5p. Developed by researchers at McMaster University, this compound blocks miR-299a-5p from binding to the 3'UTRs of its target mRNAs, thereby restoring the expression of key endogenous antifibrotic proteins, follistatin (FST) and cripto-1 (CR-1), and the survival kinase MAP3K2. In preclinical models of kidney disease, including diabetic kidney disease and chronic kidney disease, treatment with the miR-299a-5p inhibitor has been shown to reduce renal fibrosis, attenuate tubular cell apoptosis, and decrease albuminuria and glomerular hypertrophy.
