miR-29a-5p inhibitor is an experimental RNA-based therapeutic designed to target and silence the microRNA miR-29a-5p. In the context of prostate cancer research, miR-29a-5p has been identified as an oncogenic factor that suppresses ferroptosis—a form of iron-dependent regulated necrosis—by directly targeting and inhibiting the Ferritin Heavy Chain 1 (FTH1) gene. By utilizing an inhibitor (typically an antisense oligonucleotide or antagomir) to knockdown miR-29a-5p, FTH1 expression is restored, leading to increased intracellular Fe2+ levels and lipid peroxidation (measured by malondialdehyde levels). This mechanism effectively triggers ferroptosis in cancer cells, resulting in reduced cell proliferation and the inhibition of tumor growth in vivo. This approach represents a novel strategy for inducing cell death in prostate cancer by modulating miRNA-mediated iron metabolism.
