miR-29a-5p mimic is a synthetic double-stranded RNA molecule designed to replicate the biological activity of the endogenous microRNA miR-29a-5p. In the context of oncology research, particularly prostate cancer, miR-29a-5p has been identified as a key regulator of ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death. The mimic functions by binding to the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of target messenger RNAs, such as Ferritin Heavy Chain 1 (FTH1), leading to their translational repression or degradation. Research indicates that miR-29a-5p overexpression (via mimics) inhibits ferroptosis by reducing intracellular labile iron (Fe2+) and lipid peroxidation (MDA) levels, thereby promoting tumor cell survival and proliferation. Conversely, the suppression of miR-29a-5p has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in vivo, suggesting that the miR-29a-5p/FTH1 axis is a potential therapeutic target for inducing ferroptosis in cancer cells.
