miR-3073a is a microRNA (miRNA) being investigated for its potential as a therapeutic agent and prognostic biomarker in ovarian cancer. Research presented at the AACR 2017 meeting indicates that miR-3073a can induce apoptosis in various ovarian carcinoma cell lines, including those resistant to cisplatin. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the cell death machinery, specifically by enhancing the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bak1 and Bax, while decreasing the levels of anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL. When used in combination with chemotherapeutic agents like carboplatin, miR-3073a has demonstrated an additive or synergistic effect in promoting cancer cell death. The study suggests that tissue-specific pro-apoptotic miRNAs like miR-3073a could serve as novel therapeutic entities or prognostic biomarkers for ovarian cancer patients.
