miR-331-3p pre-miR is a synthetic microRNA precursor (mimic) designed to overexpress miR-331-3p, a highly conserved microRNA that plays a critical role in vascular remodeling and the progression of atherosclerosis. Research conducted at the University Hospital Halle indicates that miR-331-3p levels are significantly elevated during disease progression in atherosclerotic models, driven by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFNγ, IL-1β, and TNFα. The administration of miR-331-3p pre-miR in experimental settings promotes the proliferation, migration, and anti-apoptotic behavior of smooth muscle cells (SMCs), which are key processes in plaque development. It exerts these effects by modulating several downstream targets, including DUSP5 and PHLPP1. While the pre-miR is used to study the pathological effects of miR-331-3p, therapeutic strategies are focused on inhibiting this microRNA to mitigate vascular remodeling without compromising endothelial cell function.
