Overview

miR-588 (microRNA-588) is an endogenous human microRNA that acts as a tumor suppressor in various cancers, including breast cancer, lung squamous cell carcinoma, gastric cancer, osteosarcoma, and glioblastoma. As a therapeutic agent, synthetic miR-588 mimics or exosome-delivered miR-588 are being investigated to inhibit tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis. miR-588 exerts its effects by directly binding to the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of several target mRNAs, including CXCR4, CCL5, GRN, EIF5A2, ROBO1, and SOX5, thereby downregulating their expression. Preclinical studies, including those from Emory University, have demonstrated that restoration of miR-588 levels can significantly suppress tumor growth and metastasis in vivo, highlighting its potential as an RNA-based cancer therapeutic.
