miR-616 mimic is a synthetic double-stranded RNA molecule designed to replicate the biological activity of endogenous microRNA-616 (miR-616). In the context of prostate cancer research, miR-616 has been identified as an oncomiR that is significantly overexpressed in androgen-independent (AI) prostate cancer compared to androgen-dependent (AD) stages. The mimic is utilized in experimental models to study the oncogenic role of miR-616, which functions by suppressing the expression of the tumor suppressor Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor-2 (TFPI-2) through binding to its 3'-untranslated region (UTR). This suppression promotes androgen-independent growth and aggressive phenotypes in prostate cancer cells. While primarily used as a research tool, miRNA mimics represent a class of RNA-based therapeutics aimed at modulating gene expression pathways involved in disease progression.
