miR-720 mimic is a synthetic, double-stranded RNA oligonucleotide designed to simulate the activity of the endogenous microRNA hsa-miR-720. In preclinical research, it acts primarily by downregulating Rab35, a GTPase involved in vesicle trafficking, which subsequently activates the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. It has also been shown to directly target and suppress the expression of the αE-catenin and E-cadherin complex. While not a clinical-stage therapeutic, miR-720 mimic is widely used as a research tool to study its role in various pathologies, including type 2 diabetes (where it inhibits insulin secretion) and several cancers such as renal cell carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and triple-negative breast cancer, where it often promotes epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis.
