miR-873-3p inhibitor is an oligonucleotide-based therapeutic designed to target and neutralize the microRNA miR-873-3p. In the context of neuro-oncology, miR-873-3p has been identified as over-expressed in the serum of patients with brain tumors (including glioblastoma, meningioma, and brain metastases) and within glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs). By binding to the mature miRNA sequence, the inhibitor prevents miR-873-3p from regulating its downstream mRNA targets. Research conducted at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital has utilized these inhibitors in vitro to characterize the functional role of miR-873-3p in tumor progression. Interestingly, while miR-873-3p is over-expressed in glioblastoma, some experimental evidence suggests that its inhibition may paradoxically augment certain GSC phenotypes such as growth and self-renewal, indicating a complex regulatory role in cancer cell plasticity.
