miR-99a mimic is a synthetic, double-stranded RNA oligonucleotide designed to replicate the biological activity of the endogenous tumor-suppressive microRNA, miR-99a. In various malignancies, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), miR-99a expression is frequently downregulated, which contributes to the overexpression of oncogenic targets. The miR-99a mimic functions by binding to the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of specific messenger RNAs, such as the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) and mTOR, leading to their translational inhibition or degradation. This restoration of miR-99a activity results in the suppression of cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, and can inhibit epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). It is primarily utilized as a tool in preclinical oncology research to explore miRNA replacement therapies.
