Overview

Mirabegron is a small molecule drug classified as a selective beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist. It is primarily used for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) in adults and neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) in children aged three years and older. By activating beta-3 adrenergic receptors on the detrusor muscle of the bladder, mirabegron relaxes the bladder muscle during the storage phase of the urinary cycle, increasing bladder capacity and reducing symptoms such as urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence. Mirabegron offers an alternative to antimuscarinic agents with a different side effect profile. It was developed by Astellas Pharma and first approved in Japan in 2011; it received FDA approval in 2012[4][5][6].
