Overview
Mirabilite + rhubarb is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combination therapy developed by Longhua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine. It consists of the mineral mirabilite (sodium sulfate decahydrate) and the herb rhubarb (Rheum palmatum). This combination is primarily utilized as an external application (often in the form of a paste or poultice) for the management of malignant pleural effusion (MPE). The therapeutic rationale involves the osmotic properties of mirabilite, which helps reduce localized edema and promote the absorption of pleural fluid, combined with the anti-inflammatory and potential anti-neoplastic effects of rhubarb's active constituents, such as emodin and rhein.
