Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Miralax-Gatorade Prep is an off-label bowel preparation regimen widely used to cleanse the colon prior to a colonoscopy, particularly in the context of colorectal cancer screening and prevention. The regimen typically consists of 238–255 g of polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350), marketed under the brand name MiraLAX, dissolved in 64 ounces of Gatorade or a similar sports electrolyte beverage. PEG 3350 acts as an osmotic laxative, drawing water into the gastrointestinal tract to soften stool and promote bowel movements. The Gatorade component serves to maintain electrolyte balance and improve palatability, reducing the risk of dehydration and electrolyte disturbances compared to high-volume preparations. This regimen has been evaluated in clinical trials, including a pragmatic randomized trial sponsored by the VA Office of Research and Development, comparing its effectiveness and patient tolerability against standard 4L PEG formulations.
