Overview

Miramistin (also marketed as Myramistin) is a topical antiseptic and disinfectant with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, including antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects. It acts primarily by disrupting microbial cell membranes through its cationic detergent properties as a quaternary ammonium compound. The positively charged nitrogen in the molecule interacts with negatively charged phospholipids in microbial membranes, leading to membrane disruption and leakage of cellular contents. Miramistin also exhibits activity against biofilms and has been shown to decrease antibiotic resistance in bacteria and fungi. Originally developed during the Soviet Union's Cold War space program for use as an antiseptic in extreme environments, it is now used clinically—mainly in Russia and former Soviet bloc countries—for treating infectious diseases affecting skin, mucous membranes (including mouth/throat), wounds, burns, urogenital infections, otorhinolaryngologic diseases (ear/nose/throat), and more. It has demonstrated low toxicity with good tolerability but is not widely approved or known outside these regions[1][3][6].
