Mirasol-treated platelets are a blood component product that has undergone pathogen reduction using the Mirasol Pathogen Reduction Technology (PRT) system. Developed by Terumo BCT, the process involves adding riboflavin (Vitamin B2), a naturally occurring photosensitizer, to a unit of platelets, which is then exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. This photochemical treatment induces irreversible damage to the nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites, as well as donor white blood cells (leukocytes), thereby preventing their replication. The technology is primarily used to enhance the safety of platelet transfusions in patients with thrombocytopenia by reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections and preventing transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) without the need for gamma irradiation.
