Overview

Mirasol-treated red blood cells are a blood product processed using the Mirasol Pathogen Reduction Technology (PRT) system, developed by Terumo BCT. This technology utilizes riboflavin (vitamin B2), a naturally occurring photosensitizer, in combination with ultraviolet (UV) light to inactivate a broad range of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites, as well as residual white blood cells in donated blood. The mechanism involves riboflavin intercalating into the nucleic acids of pathogens and leukocytes; upon exposure to UV light, the riboflavin mediates a photochemical reaction that causes irreversible damage to DNA and RNA, thereby preventing replication. This process is designed to enhance the safety of chronic blood transfusions in patients with conditions such as transfusion-dependent thalassemia by reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections and transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) without the need for gamma irradiation.
