Mirazid is an oral, plant-derived anthelmintic preparation formulated from myrrh (an oleo-gum resin from Commiphora species) that was developed and marketed in Egypt as a treatment for schistosomiasis and fascioliasis. It is a small-molecule herbal mixture whose exact active constituents and molecular targets are not well defined, but experimental work suggests antischistosomal activity via damage to the tegument of adult Schistosoma worms, leading to exposure of parasite surface antigens and impaired feeding, with subsequent worm death. Mirazid was registered and launched in the early 2000s in Egypt, showed high cure rates in some early clinical reports, and advanced to phase III comparative studies versus praziquantel; however, multiple independent trials and field studies later reported low cure rates and negligible reductions in egg counts, and concerns about its effectiveness have limited its wider adoption.
