Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mirokidney is a development-stage, fully implantable bioengineered kidney designed to treat kidney failure and address the critical shortage of transplantable organs. Developed by Miromatrix Medical (now a subsidiary of United Therapeutics), the product is manufactured using a proprietary perfusion decellularization and recellularization technology. This process involves removing porcine cells from a pig kidney to create a sterile, non-immunogenic extracellular matrix scaffold, which is then seeded with human vascular and functional kidney cells. The resulting bioengineered organ is intended to function as a replacement kidney upon surgical implantation, providing a functional alternative to dialysis or traditional organ transplantation.
