miroliver ELAP is a first-of-its-kind bioengineered liver system designed to provide external metabolic and synthetic support for patients suffering from acute liver failure (ALF). Developed by Miromatrix Medical (now a subsidiary of United Therapeutics), the technology utilizes a decellularized porcine liver scaffold that is recellularized with functional human hepatocytes. This bioengineered organ is housed within an extracorporeal blood circuit, functioning similarly to a dialysis system. As the patient's blood circulates through the miroliver ELAP, the human cells within the scaffold perform essential liver functions, including detoxification and protein synthesis, serving as a bridge to either spontaneous liver recovery or a successful liver transplant.
