Misonidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole compound with radiosensitizing and antineoplastic properties. It exhibits high electron affinity, which enables it to induce the formation of free radicals and deplete radioprotective thiols in cells. This action sensitizes hypoxic tumor cells—cells with low oxygen levels that are typically resistant to radiation—to the cytotoxic effects of ionizing radiation. The resulting single-strand DNA breaks inhibit DNA synthesis, enhancing the effectiveness of radiotherapy against tumors. Misonidazole was primarily investigated as an adjunct to radiotherapy for various cancers, especially those containing hypoxic regions such as malignant gliomas and head and neck tumors[1][3][5][6].
