Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue used to prevent and treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, particularly in patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by replacing prostaglandins that are inhibited by NSAIDs, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion and protecting the stomach lining. Misoprostol also stimulates uterine contractions and cervical ripening, making it useful for medical abortion (alone or with mifepristone or methotrexate), management of miscarriage, induction of labor, and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. It was developed in 1973 for ulcer prevention and is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Developed by Searle.
