Overview

Mistletoe lectin is a cytotoxic and immunomodulatory protein complex derived from the mistletoe plant (*Viscum album*). Several forms exist (ML-1, ML-2, ML-3), with ML-1 (also called viscumin) being the most studied. Mistletoe lectin acts as a ribosome-inactivating protein that binds to cell surfaces, inducing cell death (mainly apoptosis) and stimulating immune cell activity. It is used in standardized extracts such as Lektinol for its anticancer properties. Laboratory and animal studies demonstrate that mistletoe lectin inhibits tumor cell growth, induces apoptosis, and enhances immune responses. Its mechanism includes binding to cell membranes and inactivating ribosomes, resulting in inhibition of protein synthesis and immune stimulation. Mistletoe lectin has been tested for various cancers, including breast, lung, prostate, renal cell cancers, and pancreatic cancer, and is used as an adjunct to chemotherapy for symptom management and possible tumor control[1][2][3][5][6].
