Overview

Mite allergen extract is a biological product used in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) for the treatment of house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. It typically consists of a standardized mixture of allergens from the dust mite species *Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus* and *Dermatophagoides farinae*. The mechanism involves modulating the patient's immune system to induce allergen-specific tolerance, primarily by shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated (allergic) profile to a Th1/Treg-mediated profile. This shift reduces IgE-mediated responses and increases the production of protective IgG4 antibodies and regulatory cytokines such as IL-10. It is administered via subcutaneous injection (SCIT) or sublingual (SLIT) routes. Recent research, including studies at Renji Hospital, explores its potential impact on comorbid hyperactivity symptoms in patients with respiratory allergies.
