Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mite extracts (specifically standardized dust mite extracts) are allergenic extracts derived from the house dust mites *Dermatophagoides farinae* and *Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus*. Developed by Greer Laboratories (now part of Stallergenes Greer), these extracts are FDA-approved for the skin-test diagnosis of dust mite allergy and for allergen immunotherapy (subcutaneous immunotherapy or SCIT) to treat mite-induced allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic asthma. The extracts work by delivering controlled, gradually increasing doses of dust mite allergens (such as Der p 1, Der p 2, Der f 1, and Der f 2) to desensitize the patient's immune system. This process induces the production of allergen-specific IgG4 blocking antibodies, downregulates IgE-mediated mast cell and basophil activation, and shifts the T-cell response from a pro-inflammatory Th2 phenotype toward a regulatory T-cell (Treg) and Th1 phenotype, thereby establishing long-term immunological tolerance.
