Mitera Biosciences is developing a first-in-class protein-based biologic therapeutic derived from a natural human placental protein for the treatment of solid organ transplant rejection and autoimmune disorders. Licensed exclusively from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the therapeutic candidate works through immunomodulation by upregulating T regulatory cells (Tregs) while simultaneously suppressing T effector (Teff) cells and B cell responses. This mechanism is inspired by maternal-fetal immune tolerance during pregnancy, where placental proteins prevent the maternal immune system from rejecting the fetus. The drug is being developed as a safer, non-toxic alternative to standard-of-care calcineurin inhibitors, such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus, which are associated with significant neurologic and kidney injury risks. The program is currently in preclinical development.
