Overview

Mito-CP is a mitochondria-targeted nitroxide antioxidant designed to accumulate within the mitochondrial matrix. It consists of a carboxy-proxyl (CP) nitroxide moiety covalently linked to a triphenylphosphonium (TPP+) cation, which utilizes the negative mitochondrial membrane potential for selective uptake. Mito-CP acts as a superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic and a scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly mitochondrial superoxide. In preclinical research, it has been investigated for its ability to protect against alcohol-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and esophageal stem cell expansion. Additionally, it has shown synergistic effects when combined with glycolytic inhibitors (such as 2-deoxy-D-glucose or 3-bromopyruvate) to induce ATP depletion and cell death in pancreatic cancer cell lines.
