Overview

A combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of the alkylating agents mitolactol (also known as dibromodulcitol) and carmustine (BCNU). Mitolactol is a hexitol derivative that acts as a bifunctional alkylating agent, while carmustine is a nitrosourea that cross-links DNA. This specific combination was investigated by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) in the Phase III trial 26882 for the treatment of newly diagnosed anaplastic astrocytoma. The regimen was administered in conjunction with radiotherapy, followed by adjuvant cycles. Results from the trial indicated a trend toward improved survival, but the addition of the chemotherapy combination did not provide a statistically significant survival benefit over radiotherapy alone.
