Mitoquinone is a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant and a synthetic analogue of coenzyme Q10. It is designed to accumulate within mitochondria by covalent attachment to a lipophilic triphenylphosphonium cation, which enables it to concentrate up to 1,000-fold higher than non-targeted antioxidants. This targeting allows the antioxidant moiety (ubiquinone) to block lipid peroxidation and protect mitochondria from oxidative damage by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). By preventing mitochondrial oxidative damage, it aims to prevent cell death and has been investigated for its potential in slowing or halting the progression of diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction such as Parkinson's disease, liver inflammation/fibrosis (including hepatitis C), HIV-associated end-organ disease, mild cognitive impairment/aging-related decline, and other conditions linked with oxidative stress. Developed in New Zealand in the late 1990s, it is widely sold as a dietary supplement but has also been studied clinically for various indications[1][3][5][7].
