Overview

MIV-150 is a potent third-generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) and urea-PETT derivative. Originally developed by Medivir and later licensed to the Population Council, it is primarily being evaluated as a topical microbicide for the prevention of HIV infection. MIV-150 functions by binding to an allosteric pocket on the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, inhibiting the replication of the viral genome. It is frequently co-formulated with other antiviral agents like zinc acetate and carrageenan into gels (e.g., PC-1005 or MZC gel) and intravaginal rings (e.g., MZCL IVR) to provide broad-spectrum protection against HIV-1, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and human papillomavirus (HPV). Beyond its application in infectious disease prevention, MIV-150 has been investigated for potential therapeutic use in acute coronary syndrome and as a computational candidate for COVID-19 treatment.
