Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mixed salts of a single-entity amphetamine product extended-release capsules (commonly referred to by the brand name Adderall XR) is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant formulation containing a 3:1 mixture of dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine salts (specifically dextroamphetamine saccharate, amphetamine aspartate monohydrate, dextroamphetamine sulfate, and amphetamine sulfate). Developed as a once-daily extended-release treatment, it is widely approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The drug works by increasing the extracellular levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the synaptic cleft. It achieves this primarily by binding to and reversing the transport of the sodium-dependent dopamine transporter (DAT) and sodium-dependent noradrenaline transporter (NET), as well as acting as an agonist at the trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) and inhibiting the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2).
