Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MIXO is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic containing cefixime as the active pharmaceutical ingredient. Developed by Maxitech Pharma, MIXO is approved for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis), middle ear infections (otitis media), urinary tract infections, and uncomplicated gonorrhea. Cefixime exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), specifically PBP-1a, PBP-1b, and PBP-3, which are essential for bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis. This inhibition disrupts cell wall integrity, leading to osmotic instability, cell lysis, and bacterial death. MIXO is stable against many beta-lactamase enzymes, allowing it to remain effective against several resistant bacterial strains.
