MJK2134025 is a small molecule inhibitor of NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) developed by the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz for the treatment of ischemic stroke. NOX4 is a key enzyme responsible for the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the brain following an ischemic event, which leads to oxidative damage, neuronal death, and breakdown of the blood-brain barrier. By selectively inhibiting NOX4, MJK2134025 aims to mitigate these pathological processes, offering a neuroprotective effect that could improve functional recovery in stroke patients. The compound is currently in the preclinical stage of development, where it has demonstrated the ability to reduce infarct volume and preserve neurological function in animal models of cerebral ischemia.
