Overview

MK-3402 is a small molecule metallo-beta-lactamase inhibitor developed by Merck. It is designed to block metallo-beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria, which confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. By inhibiting these enzymes, MK-3402 restores the efficacy of beta-lactam antibiotics against resistant bacterial strains. The drug has demonstrated potent inhibition of key metallo-beta-lactamases such as IMP‑1, NDM‑1, and VIM‑1 in preclinical studies. Early-phase clinical trials have shown that intravenous administration of MK‑3402 is well tolerated in healthy adults and supports further development for use in combination with other antibacterial agents to combat antimicrobial resistance[1][4][5].
